How to Dimension your Genset - kWh to kVA Conversion

There are several ways to size a generator set. Even so, most methods generate approximate and inaccurate results. The ideal is to request the demand from a specialist company, with robust engineering and prepared to better serve customers. In this regard, GERAFORTE is a reference in South America.

The conversion from kWh to kVA cannot be done directly. Although, it is possible to use other means to size the appropriate generator for your business.

What is possible to convert is kW to kVA. Therefore, it is not possible to define the power of the genset by analyzing the residential electricity bill, where it is paid for the value of kWh used in the period (month). However, if the consumer pays his electricity bill for the contracted demand, it is possible to have an idea of the generator that will serve him.

CONTRACTED DEMAND: contract with the energy concessionaire informing the energy demand that the company needs to carry out its operations. It is mandatory for the concessionaire to make this demand available to the company. The latter, in return, must pay monthly for the energy supplied, regardless of whether they use it or not.

If your electricity bill is by contracted demand, it is very simple to find the power of your generator set: just take the highest power value ever recorded (at peak hours and off-peak hours) and divide it by the power factor (we take this as 0.92). Then divide the result by 0.7.

Formula:
Contract demand = (Pmax / 0,92) / 0,7

This value is estimated and does not take into account loads that may have another type of influence on the power of the generator, such as: electric motors, air conditioning, welding machines, etc. Therefore, in addition to the calculated value based on the formula, it is also interesting to calculate the load ratio, for a more accurate estimate.

LOAD RATIO: sum of the maximum powers of each equipment.
